I’ve been wanting to start a travel blog for so long now, and the only thing holding me back (besides procrastination, nagging self-doubts, fear of success, time, hangovers, having a baby, you get the point) was the number of travel blogs already out there. So dumb, yet I am beginning to realize this is really common.
Starting my journey (pun intended) is still such a nagging desire, always there at the moment I get a chance to sit and reflect on all the cool places I’ve been and still want to go.
I studied abroad during my junior year at Virginia Tech, in this super cute little town in southernmost Switzerland called Riva San Vitale. Europe fascinated me, and I would love to live there again someday. My husband was born and raised in South Africa, and the arrival of our son in December guarantees a lot of required travel in our future. Therefore, I said fuck it. I’m going to do start this website anyways.
Actually, the Wanderslut part started as a funny joke, as we were heading to the Coachella Music Festival in April 2015. Every April, thousands of flower-crown and fridge-draped girls descend upon Southern California, flocking to the 3-day music festival out in Indio, California.
You can 100% count on seeing gaggles of 20-year-olds tripping their balls off on molly and shrooms, like they’re at the Woodstock of our time. Peace signs abound as they twirl around the grassy lawns of the Polo Fields and stop to take a selfie in front of the iconic ferris wheel. I saw a shirt emblazoned with the word “Wanderlust” while shopping one day, and mistakenly read it as “Wanderslut,” laughing out loud and nearly making my coffee go up my nose. (ouch.)
So, I ran back home, immediately bought the domain name…and let it sit there for over a year! You see, just two days after arriving home from Coachella, I found out I was pregnant. This realization kinda not only killed my appetite and our social life, but also any shred productivity on this idea for a while. It made it seem like sort of a pipe dream and silly idea compared to the
shitstorm huge life changes that we were facing.
Until I had my son, fell completely in love, and vowed to find some way for us to work remotely from a computer/at home/abroad and simultaneously spend as much time as possible with him while traveling the world as we please.
Et Voilà! World Wanderslut was born.
My goals for this blog/travel mecca go-to-source, et al. is:
It will be a wonderful journal of our family’s journeys around the world together.
It will serve as inspiration for us to plan future trips—please always comment with your ideas for us, too!
It will hopefully be inspiration for you, as you are planning your own.
With that said, here we go! Thank you for visiting my page, I look forward to the adventures ahead. Cheers! Ciao! Hallelujah!
